It's not a bad implement in some ways.
Take a look at the picture to see how it works: Those rods / teeth / spikes at the bottom are the grabbing component. The mechanism forces them closed when they are in the ground all of about two inches (see the pedal point / that doesn't move, though it's the disc that drives the mechanism.
But here's how well I think it works:
1. This device is able to grab the entire root system of anything but the most close to ground plants. It goes all of two and a half inches into the ground, and its grabbing clasp (rods/teeth/spikes) have no dexterity to speak of. It's the mechanism.
2. Soft soil is an absolute must. You can't get this thing into the ground by force. It won't work (and it's in your instruction manual to do this)
3. Even so, the damage it does I'm sure does put stress on a plant, and you don't have to sit on your rear to pull out your weeds.
My conclusion?
Depends. We'd all probably do best to just mow our dandelions down before they seed and then go at them with the hand weeder (something that looks like a probe with a Y on it, not like a trowel) to dig up the roots entirely. This'll save time in the long run.
But the dog i's not a complete piece of junk. Go ahead and half-(rear) it if you like. If so, this two to three star worthy thing is probably useful. If you are the right size -
Don't buy this if you're six feet tall. Don't do it - you will throw out your back leaning over.
But to anyone who's, say, between four and a half to five feet tall: this thing seems built for you. Give it a look.

I bought one of these after glowing reports from a friend then testing hers myself. I, too, was committed to avoiding chemicals on my lawn, and had been doggedly trying to manage a significant infestation of dandelions by hand-digging. Indeed the Weed Hound is a snap to use, with a little tweaking on technique, such as properly centering on the plant/root and twisting to free any binding before pulling. So much better than bending over with a digger! That said, the problem came when I left the divots (not insignificantly sized) open, thinking a little aeration was a bonus. Apparently my dandelions had roots that went far deeper than the Weed Hound, and eventually I had new dandelions sprouting up from the bottom of the old divots (3" below ground level). Perhaps if I'd filled these holes, as another reviewer suggested for cosmetic reasons, this situation wouldn't have sprung up. As it was, the resulting problem was far worse than what I started with. This is an excellent tool, but I just wanted to share my experience and caution about the roots below the divot.

As a new home owner with lawns full of weeds, I wanted to find an eco-friendly way to get rid of weeds. I bought the Weed Hound after reading the reviews here on Amazon. I have to say the Weed Hound is an ingenious device that is very effective in getting weeds out. Before I had the Weed Hound, I had to use a trowel and dig around the roots and pull out the weeds. This left 3" to 4" divots in my lawn. The Weed Hound did the same thing, but left only maybe a half inch divot, and was a lot easier on my back. I was easily able to pull out many Broadleaf Plantain weeds out completely with roots. My only complaint is that the device started jamming, and hitting it with my hand to unjam it started to hurt. This was after probably 1/2 hour of use. Despite this, I still was very impressed by the Weed Hound and recommend it as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical sprays. The Weed Hound is well worth the cost.

This thing works on small weeds, but the tines are too small for the big ones.You have to have good boots on when using this.
